Hello Slicehost!

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

As you might know, I’ve been sharing a dedicated server with three more guys. Since several months ago, we have been thinking about change the provider because the plans offered by JVDS were very price-outdated compared with other providers. Dreamhost didn’t fit our requirements (no root access and shared databases., WTF?!), so we had to choose between either Linode or Slicehost.

After waiting for about a month in the prospective customer queue, we finally moved to Slicehost. Slicehost is a fast, made-from-geeks-to-geeks and XEN powered virtual dedicated servers provider.

We’re quite happy with the change, we got a new machine with four times more memory for the same price and we also moved from Apache to Lighttpd. All the references from Slicehost we read were good and, at least by now, I second those thoughts.

Skyhusker made an awesome work migrating the stuff and all the services are already moved. Of course, we’re running Etch.

Debian developer

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

Yes, that’s it, I’m finally Debian developer. I would like to use this post to say thanks to everyone who helped me to achieve this goal since I applied in 2005-10-05, here we go!

Thanks to…

  • Ricardo Cárdenes, the man who linked me to Debian development world and, of course, my advocate.
  • Moray Allan, my responsible AM.
  • The NM Staff (Myon, HE, Ganneff, Elmo…)
  • My usual sponsors: Ricardo, Ana, Amaya, Mones, Gunnar….

I hope to write an small report about the NM process with my impressions and opinions soon, so stay tuned. By the way, if you are planning to join Debian and you’re able to meet me, I’m offering GPG key signing since today :)

Finally, thanks to all my #dudes!

Relicensing

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

I’ve just relicensed my website, after some time thinking about it I moved my website contents from a Creative Commons BY-SA 2.0 to a GPLv2 license once and for all.

The main reason is that my concept of free and free software is really closer to the Debian Free Software Guidelines, and, unfortunately, CC licenses terms don’t match with them very well (issue discussed since months ago in debian-legal and summed up in this document).

Driving lessons: first day

Friday, October 6th, 2006

Yeaaaaay! (just trying to free my mind)

After the first contact with my teacher (a man aged approximately 55-60), he suggested me to check the position of the rear-view mirror and the seat (as normal). Note that my experience driving cars tends to zero, anyway he said:

Teacher - OK guy, start the engine, set first gear and go-go!
Me - WTF!?!?

I was a bit scared when he said me this, because we were in the middle of Gijón, with tons and tons of traffic. After a while zig-zagging between cars, vans and buses, fighting with the clutch-and-accelerator-mixture issue and hearing “Nacho, please, go slowly” the class reached the end.

It’s a bit annoying when the teacher helps you with pedals because it’s impossible to know how exactly pedal behaviour is.

In a few words, could be better. I’ll continue improving my skills next week.

Bullshit

This is my feedback to this stuff:

I will definitely put this function on my final year project, to see how dummies comment its usefulness with any context available.

namespace laughtersSpace
{
template < typename FOO >
FOO functionToDummies (FOO bar)
{
return bar;
}
}

In short, the Internet is not suitable for everyone skilled to type with a keyboard.

On the 12th September Rob Levin, known to many as Freenode’s lilo, was hit by a car while riding his bike. He suffered head injuries and was in a coma. Rob was being treated at the Neuro Trauma Intensive Care Unit at a local hospital in Houston, Texas where he passed away on Sept 16th.

Our thoughts are with Rob and his family, and we ask that you respect their privacy during this difficult time.

«Good morning Alameda, Pilots talking to you, welcome to Port of Gijón»,

Something like this was the first that i heard before board Cares (one of the tugboats), which took us to Alameda’s stern to tug it to Marcelino León’s dock.

I’m really grateful with everybody who made this possible, take a look to a small piece of this incredible experience.

More than 1000 is the number of entries generated by AsturLiNUX’s bloggers on their particular corner since 2004/03/29, when the first post was written.

To this number we should add all the external feeds that, with this set, daily fill AsturLiNUX’s Planet.

Congratulations Lordi!

When…

Friday, May 5th, 2006

When nothing smiles you, when everything you do looks like a waste of time, when people doesn’t understand you, when all you have is a set of electric signals converted to binary values, when you feel that nothing is sailing in the right direction, when all your illusions crash in a wall of hypocrisy, when music transmits sadness, when exist requests without replies, when you feel this sensations, the unique work i can dedicate you is ‘welcome’.

5.0, four years since 1.0.
